Most People teach this habit without even knowing it. When their puppies are young and small, they both get excited to see each other and when the puppy jumps on them they bend over and pet them, which is giving them praise for jumping. Therefore teaching them this is how we greet people.
Of course the best way to train this is to not allow our young puppies to jump on us from the beginning.
HOW I TEACH MY PUPPIES TO GREET PEOPLE!
- All my puppy training is done on a leach so I can control the situation.
- Teaching my Puppy to sit when someone comes in the door, using high value rewards. ( Start with your family, before introducing them to strangers).
- Start from a distance in the same room and then bring the distracting person closer and closer as your dog understands what you are teaching them to do.
- Now they are ready to practice the above at your front door.
- Patience and consistency will make this perfect.
